CHAPTER TWELVE

I looked around and smiled. Even though part of me wanted to jump out of my skin, I made it a point to notice and enjoy the beauty around me.

The queens were in an animated debate over how to approach their mysterious acquaintance. They were also painting their nails as the discussion ensued. They offered to give me a manicure, but I passed. I was a short-nailed, no-polish kind of gal. Jennifer was napping on the sofa with my fur babies. Gabe and Gideon were doing the dishes. I’d tried to help but was shooed away. Tim was doing yoga by the fireplace and Candy Vargo was making fun of him. It didn’t bother him a bit. He just laughed and continued his sun salutations.

Alana Catherine’s absence was jarring, but I knew she was safe. That was all that mattered.

“I think I need to go for a run,” I told Gideon.

“Good plan,” he said with a smile and soapy hands. “Clear your mind. We’ve got this.”

“I think you should stay close by,” Gabe said, concerned.

“I agree,” I replied, putting on a light jacket. It was cold outside, but I would heat up fast. “I’m curious about the human gal walking in our fields.”

“Don’t you be gettin’ into shit that you can’t fuckin’ handle,” Candy Vargo warned. “You want me to come with you?”

“The woman was human,” I reminded her. “And I can handle a lot.”

Candy didn’t look convinced.

“Fine,” I muttered. She was the Keeper of Fate after all. If she had a feeling, I would listen. “I’ll just run around the house for a half hour or so.”

“Better,” she said, satisfied. “I’m gonna look for Gram.”

Candy adored Gram. She’d become like a mother to the crazy Immortal. Losing Gram would devastate Candy.

“Don’t get too close if you find her,” I told Candy. “The closer I got, the more she flickered.”

Candy nodded. “Wouldn’t hurt a hair on that woman’s beautiful head. I love her.”

I walked over to Candy Vargo and gave her a hug. “She loves you too.”

The Keeper of Fate smiled. She was actually a very pretty woman. “She does love me. I ain’t never had a mamma until Gram.”

I didn’t say a word. If I did, I would cry.

“Run,” I whispered, walking out of the house before I lost it. The cool crisp air would do me good.
